Information for journalists and media organisations
The information and contact details on this page are only for journalists, reporters and researchers from professional media organisations.
There are resources to help you accurately report about the Tribunal and the decisions we make, including:
- information about how the Tribunal operates
- guidance on how to access decisions or apply for access to documents we may hold
- details about attending a hearing.
If you have a question about your own case or a case you are a party to, please visit our Contact us page instead to find out how you should contact the Tribunal.
Making a media enquiry
Contact the Tribunal’s media team by:
- Phone +61 2 9276 5461
- Email media@art.gov.au
We are based in Sydney and will generally respond according to your deadline during normal business hours.
If you have an urgent, after-hours media enquiry, call +61 436 409 495 and leave a voicemail message. Please do not text, as our on-call mobile may be diverted to another phone, in which case we will not receive your text message.
There are some things we may not be able to help you with
While we will do our best to help, we may not be able to answer some questions or provide much information about some topics. These include:
- where the law prohibits us from sharing information about something
- if there is a confidentiality order on a case
- when your question is about a particular case
- when you ask us for our opinion on something or someone
- when you ask us questions about individual applicants, parties, members or staff
- requests for comments about policies, procedures or legislation.
Attending a hearing
If you are a journalist or reporter who would like to attend a hearing for a particular case, you can visit the scheduled public hearings and other case events page where we publish details of our:
- daily public listings
- weekly Guidance and Appeals Panel hearings
- livestreams of selected public hearings.
Most hearings can be viewed by members of the public, either in person or online, unless the presiding Member decides to close the hearing.
Please read the information we provide for members of the public attending Tribunal hearings before asking us if you can attend a hearing.
If a public hearing is being held online and is not being livestreamed, you can contact us at media@art.gov.au to ask for a link to the hearing. Please send your email as early as possible on the business day before the scheduled hearing.
Your email should include:
- the date, case number and applicant's name for the hearing you want to attend
- your name
- your role or position title
- the organisation you work for
- your reply email address and telephone number.
The following case events are not generally open to the public:
- conferences
- some hearings within our social security jurisdictional area
- protection (refugee) hearings
- hearings within our intelligence and security jurisdictional area.

We publish our media releases and news on the News and updates page.
