If you want to know more about what it’s like to work at the Tribunal, you can read our results from the APS Employee Census. This is a yearly survey for APS employees to share their views about their workplace.
We publish our census results and an action plan to address any findings as part of our commitment to transparency. This also supports the APS Reform priority of building a public service that is a model employer.

Before you apply
We employ most of our staff under the Public Service Act 1999. You must meet some key criteria before you can be employed by the Tribunal.
The Tribunal carries out security checks to make sure you are suitable for the role and eligible to access Tribunal systems and information. Depending on the role, this may include:
- verifying your employment history and qualifications as part of checking your references
- verifying your identity using a document verification service called Veritas
- confirming your Australian citizenship
- a criminal history check
- a working with vulnerable people check, if the role requires it
- obtaining and maintaining a security clearance, if the role requires one
- a conflict of interest declaration
- ongoing integrity checks during your employment, including police record checks from time to time.
You must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply for a position at the Tribunal.
Successful applicants will be asked to complete a health and medical declaration. You can let us know in this declaration if you need any reasonable adjustments to support you in the workplace.
If you have received a redundancy payment from an APS agency or the Australian Parliamentary Service, there are restrictions on when you can be re-employed.
You can find more information about these restrictions on the website of the Australian Public Service Commission.
When you apply
In this section you will find information to help you with your application.
You may use AI tools when applying for roles at the Tribunal, unless we state otherwise, but you must accept responsibility for the accuracy of your application.
Please read the Australian Public Service Commission’s Principles for candidate use of AI in recruitment and make sure you understand them. These principles guide the ethical, responsible and transparent use of AI tools, including examples of acceptable and unacceptable use.
If you provide false or misleading information, you may be disqualified from the recruitment process. If you’re already employed in the APS, it may lead to disciplinary action under the APS Code of Conduct.
We don’t use AI to screen applications or CVs, or to make selection decisions. Human selection panel members make all assessment decisions, including who progresses to shortlisting and interviews. We may use AI to help draft position descriptions and advertising material.
To help you with your application, we recommend that you:
- review the position description so you have a detailed understanding of the role
- assess whether you have the required capabilities, skills and qualifications listed in the position description to ensure you are suitable for the role
- read the job advertisement carefully, including the ‘How to apply’ section which contains specific information about the application requirements
- tailor your CV so it demonstrates that your skills, experience and knowledge from current and previous roles is relevant to the one you’re applying for
- if asked to provide a written response, use the STAR model
- use spelling and grammar checks
- make sure you submit your application by the advertised closing date and time, as late application requests are only granted in exceptional circumstances.
You will find more detail about some of these points in Applying for an APS job: cracking the code.
Applications are lodged through our online recruitment system.
You will need to register using a valid email address. The registration process can take time, so we recommend registering well before the job’s closing date.
Once you have registered, you can start, resume or review your job application at any time.
If you have questions about accessing our careers webpages or submitting your application, please contact our Talent Management team.
The Tribunal is committed to creating a workplace culture where diversity is valued and all employees are supported.
We encourage and welcome applications from:
- people with disability
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians
- people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
- people of all genders
- the LGBTQI+ community
- mature aged people.
Our workplace diversity plan [PDF, <1 MB] helps us build an organisation which reflects the diversity of the Australian community.
If you require any reasonable adjustments to participate in the recruitment process, please let us know in your application form or contact our Talent Management team at any time during the recruitment process.
If you need clarification or more information about a specific advertised position, please reach out to the contact person named in the advertisement.
You can contact us through the National Relay Service if you have a hearing, sight or speech impairment.
We are members of the Circle Back initiative. This means that if you apply to work at the Tribunal, we will respond and let you know the outcome of your application.
Most roles at the Tribunal are advertised to include RecruitAbility, a scheme which encourages the employment of people with disability in the APS.
RecruitAbility gives you the opportunity to progress to further stages in the assessment process if you:
- opt into the scheme
- declare you have a disability, and
- meet the minimum requirements of a vacancy advertised under the scheme.
To opt in, you must tick the box next to RecruitAbility in the recruitment support/accommodations section of the job application form. Declaring that you have a disability will not automatically include you.
Our recruitment privacy statement explains how we handle your personal information during recruitment, including why we collect it, how we store it and when we may share it.
